Family City Break Packing List

Family City Break Packing List - a practical checklist!

Family City Break Packing List: Essentials for the Whole Family

We absolutely love city breaks – especially Rome and Barcelona have completely stolen our hearts. There’s something so lovely about walking cobbled streets, stopping for ice cream at little cafés, and enjoying parks and piazzas with your children. Planning a city break with children can feel a bit overwhelming – from transport and sightseeing to meals and maybe naps – but preparation is everything. Here’s our handy packing list to help your family enjoy your urban adventure without forgetting anything.

Travelling to Rome with family or friends? This spot had all the space we needed — and a great location too.

Clothing & Shoes

  • Comfortable walking shoes for everyone – city streets mean lots of walking!

  • Lightweight layers – cities can be unpredictable with weather, especially if you’re hopping between indoor museums and sunny squares.

  • Waterproof jacket or umbrellas – always handy for a sudden drizzle.

  • Hats and sunglasses – essential for sightseeing in the sun.

  • Easy-to-change clothes for kids – spills and accidents happen!

Daily Essentials

  • Small backpack or day bag for each adult – for snacks, water, and essentials on the go.

  • Reusable water bottles – keep everyone hydrated without constantly buying drinks.

  • Snacks – handy for the journey and for sightseeing stops.

  • Wet wipes and tissues – city trips are sticky, and toilets aren’t always clean.

  • Hand sanitizer – a must for little hands after public transport or playground stops.

  • Sunscreen – even in cities, a bit of sun protection goes a long way.

Entertainment & Tech

  • Tablets or portable games – lifesavers for train or plane journeys.

  • Headphones for kids – keeps everyone happy on noisy transport.

  • A few small toys – comfort items or favourites for downtime.

  • Phone and charger (maybe a powerbank) – you’ll want to capture those city moments!

Practical Bits

  • Travel documents – passports, tickets, and any booking confirmations.

  • Just in case – plasters, antihistamine pills, pain relief, and anything your child might need.

  • Money & cards – small change for public transport or ice cream, plus credit cards. In Europe it’s possible to live without cash, but some coins are handy.

  • Foldable stroller or buggy – our stroller was stolen in Rome, but luckily we managed to get a new one. Emil was 2, and it was absolutely indispensable for navigating the city. Even older kids appreciate a break from walking.

Optional Extras

  • A small blanket or towel – perfect for a sunny park stop.

  • Light toys for downtime – colouring books, stickers or games.

City breaks with children don’t have to be stressful. With a bit of planning, the right packing, and a flexible attitude, you’ll be free to explore, enjoy, and make memories together. Pack smart, keep calm, and get ready for your next urban adventure!
