Barcelona travel guide, where to eat & stay

Barcelona – My Favourite City

Barcelona is one of those cities I just keep coming back to. I’ve been around ten times now, and it honestly never gets old. There’s just something about the mix of architecture, food, beach, and atmosphere that makes it impossible not to fall in love with.

My latest trip was in 2024, and it felt just as magical as the first time. If you’re planning a trip, here’s a simple guide to what you should see, where to eat, and where to stay.

What to See in Barcelona

Barcelona Cathedral & the Gothic Quarter
Start in the heart of the city at the Barcelona Cathedral. The whole Gothic Quarter around it is incredibly charming, with narrow streets, small shops, and hidden squares. Walk all the way from El Corte Inglés down towards Plaça Reial – it’s one of my favourite walks in the city.

La Boqueria Market
Right off La Rambla, you’ll find the famous Boqueria Market. It’s busy, yes, but still worth a visit. Grab a fresh juice, some fruit, or just wander around and take in the atmosphere.

Passeig de Gràcia & Gaudí’s Houses
This street is home to some of Gaudí’s most iconic buildings. Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller, and Casa Lleó Morera sit side by side and are absolutely stunning. It’s one of those places where you just stop and stare.

La Pedrera (Casa Milà)
One of Gaudí’s masterpieces and definitely worth going inside. The rooftop is especially beautiful with its sculptural chimneys and views over the city. Book tickets in advance – it’s popular.

Sagrada Familia
You can’t go to Barcelona without seeing Sagrada Familia. It’s easy to get there by metro, and it’s even more impressive in real life than you expect. If you can, go up one of the towers – it’s absolutely worth it. And definitely book your ticket ahead of time.

Of course an absolute must to see La Sagrade Familia

Miró Museum & Montjuïc
One of my personal favourites. Take the funicular from Paral·lel and walk up towards the Miró Museum. It’s such a peaceful area, and the views over the city are beautiful. Even if you’re not a huge art person, it’s worth it just for the setting.

Parc Güell
Another Gaudí highlight and one of the most unique parks I’ve ever visited. Take the metro to Lesseps – it might look like a longer walk, but it’s actually much easier and takes you to the main entrance. Don’t follow Google Maps here, it often sends you on a long detour. Book tickets in advance.

Picasso Museum
If you enjoy art, this is a lovely museum to visit. It gives a great insight into Picasso’s early work and his connection to Barcelona.

Barceloneta Beach
If you need a break from sightseeing, hop on the metro and head to Barceloneta. It’s such a nice contrast to the city – beach, sea, and a more relaxed pace.

Where to Eat

Barcelona is made for food lovers, and these are some of my go-to spots:

  • Tapa Tapa – great for classic tapas in a relaxed setting.

  • Kasa Japo – amazing sushi and a bit of a hidden gem.

  • Jesús Restaurant – perfect for an authentic and simple lunch.

  • El Nacional – a must-visit. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s an experience with multiple kitchens under one roof.

Where to Stay

I love the Amister Apartments on Calle Pelai, and honestly, I don’t even feel like recommending anywhere else.

We’ve stayed there twice, and the location is just so perfect. You’re right in the centre, within walking distance to almost everything. The apartments are really nice and ideal for families – especially if you like having the option to make your own breakfast.

It only takes 5-10 minutes to get to El Corte Inglés, and in the basement, there’s the most amazing supermarket. It’s perfect for picking up fresh food, snacks, and everything you need to start the day slowly before heading out.

Barcelona is one of those cities that has a bit of everything. You can spend your days walking through historic streets, exploring incredible architecture, relaxing by the sea, and ending the evening with amazing food.

And somehow, it still leaves you wanting to come back. Outside my home country it is truly my favorite city in the world.
